Whakatāne District Council Puts The Focus on Sustainability

Our team had the incredible privilege of attending a special event dedicated to celebrating sustainability in tourism. The Green Room Program presentation, hosted by Tourism Bay of Plenty, Bay of Plenty Regional Council, and Tourism Industry Aotearoa, brought together local tourism operators who have shown exceptional dedication in implementing sustainable initiatives. The event served as a platform to showcase their achievements and inspire others in the industry.

The event featured a lineup of inspiring presenters who shared their stories and experiences, highlighting the positive impact of sustainable practices in the tourism sector. One of the standout presentations came from Nadine ToeToe of Kohutapu Lodge, a whānau-owned business that has made remarkable contributions to the local community, especially during challenging times like the pandemic. Their journey served as a powerful example of how sustainability can create meaningful change and uplift the entire community.

As the presentations unfolded, they sparked meaningful conversations and collaborations among the attendees. The event emphasized the vital role of sustainability in shaping the future of the tourism industry, encouraging participants to explore innovative approaches and strategies. Against the backdrop of the stunning Whakatāne I-Site, the event provided an ideal setting for updates, stories, and inspiration to flow freely.

The evening left attendees excited about the long-term economic impact of sustainability and responsible tourism, not just for our region but also beyond. It showcased the immense potential for creating a tourism industry that respects the environment, supports local communities, and offers unforgettable experiences for visitors. The commitment and dedication displayed by the participating tourism operators highlighted the positive transformation that can be achieved when sustainability takes center stage.

We extend our gratitude to Tourism Bay of Plenty, Bay of Plenty Regional Council, and Tourism Industry Aotearoa for organizing this remarkable gathering. Through the presentations, discussions, and collaborations that took place, it became evident that sustainability is a driving force that will shape the future of our industry. We eagerly anticipate the continued growth of sustainable practices and responsible tourism, bringing long-lasting benefits to our region and serving as a shining example to the broader tourism community.
