Horticulture

Toi EDA collaborates with and supports existing as well as up and coming horticulture businesses throughout the region.

Within the Eastern Bay of Plenty we have outstanding natural resources, fertile land and high-quality water in our rivers and lakes.  Alongside this we have a climate that supports the growth of high value horticulture such as kiwi fruit, berries, avocado, macadamia, truffles and others.

Land developments such as avocados, macadamia, mānuka and truffles are proceeding at pace across our rohe.

 Kiwifruit

Bay of Plenty has always been known as the kiwifruit capital of New Zealand, with considerable expansion of orchards occurring across the wider region.

Blueberries

The Meihana Koata Trust received a $2.1M loan from the Provincial Growth Fund’s Whenua Māori allocation to support an 18.8 hectare blueberry orchard development in Te Teko.  In partnership with Miro (a collective of 29 Māori iwi, hapū and whānau) the development at Te Teko is set to become New Zealand’s largest blueberry orchard.

Supporting Infrastructure

With the explosion of growth in horticulture there is a significant investment needed in the region’s processing and packing capability. New greenhouses, packhouses, coolstores and studies into value-add ingredient processing capacity are all being actively explored.

Other

Other land developments are also in progress, with macadamia nuts, truffles and avocados being some of the areas of development underway currently.  If you want to know more about these developments, feel free to get in touch with the Toi EDA team.
