In July 2021 Toi EDA partnered with Trust Horizon, BayTrust and Eastbay REAP to fund access to 'Dot Loves Data'.
This innovative live data platform allows us to track key community indicators such as population, employment, income and benefits, housing, and deprivation.
Since July 2021, other local partners have joined this platform enabling them to access rich data sources.
You can view a presentation showing key statistics for our districts below. This will be reviewed and updated every 6 months.
Alongside this there are regular workforce reports prepared from this data.

KEY EMPLOYMENT INDUSTRIES IN THE EASTERN BAY OF PLENTY

Manufacturing is by far the dominant sector within Kawerau, leveraging geothermal heat, having rail access to the port of Tauranga, and only being 45mins away from Tauranga labour force. This is expected to increase significantly with improved rail access already underway! We see Kawerau as a key inland port for the EBOP for getting our goods through to the port of Tauranga efficiently.

Opotiki district is growth in high value horticulture (kiwifruit) and aquaculture is significant ! For aquaculture we have seen the opening of the WMOL processing plant in 2021, with the Opotiki Harbour and Marina development planned for 2023. Alongside this there is significant growth planned for the sea farms and other potentials for on shore aquaculture. With additional irrigation schemes and investment in Maori land we are seeing a significant increase in kiwifruit and other high value horticulture.

Whakatane is the main town within the EBOP district, and the reason why healthcare, education and retail are significant – supporting the whole region. There is also significant manufacturing in the area, with our alloy boat builders a key component of this. Our primary sector remains a backbone for this community also and has performed extremely well! In addition the tourism sector for this area is really strong and with a huge number of annual visitors here to experience the offerings we have.
