Eastern Bay of Plenty Road Safety Programme: Overseas Driver Training

Our recent overseas driver training pilot programme collaborating with EBRSP, WDC and Riverlock packhouse (Opotiki) has proven to be an essential initiative for enhancing road safety and supporting the integration of drivers from Vanuatu into New Zealand's road network. The RSE’s (Recognised seasonal employee) programme, guided by the best practices of NZ Kiwifruit Growers Incorporated (NZKGI), provided participants with comprehensive knowledge of New Zealand road rules, legal requirements, and practical driving skills.

Key Highlights:

  • Enhanced Road Safety: Participants learned crucial road rules, including keeping left, seatbelt use, and understanding road signs, significantly reducing the risk of accidents.

  • Adapting to Local Conditions: The training helped Vanuatu drivers adapt to New Zealand’s well-maintained and regulated roads, making them more confident and competent drivers.

  • Legal Compliance: Emphasis on New Zealand’s strict traffic laws ensured participants are well-prepared to comply with local regulations, preventing legal issues.

  • Reducing Distractions: The programme educated drivers on the importance of avoiding distractions, such as mobile phone use, promoting safer driving habits.

  • Cultural Integration: Sessions on community cultural awareness helped participants understand and respect local customs, aiding their social integration.

  • Practical Application: The combination of theoretical lessons and practical driving sessions reinforced learning and boosted driving confidence.

  • Positive Feedback: Participants expressed their appreciation, with comments like “I’m good at driving now” and “I’ve learned more different things,” highlighting the programme’s success.

The continued need for this programme is evident as more drivers from Vanuatu and similar backgrounds arrive in New Zealand. Ensuring ongoing training will help maintain high safety standards and support the successful integration of overseas drivers.

We are proud of the positive impact this programme has had and remain committed to providing essential training and support to our diverse driving community. Thank you to all participants and supporters who made this initiative a success.
