An Update from the DIA on Aotearoa’s Affordable Water Reform
Toi EDA recently hosted a collective meeting that provided valuable insights into the affordable water reform in New Zealand. Glenda Brighouse, Brent Manning, and Vaughan Payne were attended from the DIA, and they shared their knowledge and expertise on this important topic with our CEO Donna Perese and Whakatāne District Council CE, Steph O Sullivan.
As an economic development agency, staying up-to-date with the latest information and updates is crucial for us to support the development of our region. We were delighted to host this meeting, which provided us with a deeper understanding of the government's affordable water reform.
The government recently announced major changes to New Zealand's affordable water reform program, including the establishment of 10 new regionally-led entities that will still deliver significant cost savings to New Zealand households. Local Government Minister Kieran McAnulty stated in an official press release that the reforms are essential to avoid unaffordable rate bills for households, which could reach up to $9,730 per year by 2054 if the current water infrastructure deficit is not addressed.
Toi EDA is committed to supporting connections and providing information that benefits the Eastern Bay of Plenty economy. We will continue to host events and share relevant news and updates that enable our community to make informed decisions and contribute to the growth of our region.
