Trade Training Course Empowers Murupara Community: A Pathway to Success

Murupara, New Zealand – Ripeka Hawkins, an esteemed advisor at Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Manawa and a dedicated Employment Advisor at the Work for Life Centre, has unveiled exciting details about the newly launched Trade Training Course. This transformative program, which commenced on March 20, 2024, promises to empower participants and open doors to rewarding careers in the trades.

As the Employment Advisor, Ripeka Hawkins plays a pivotal role in connecting participants with employment opportunities and suitable courses. Her commitment ensures that each individual finds their perfect fit within the dynamic world of trades.

The Trade Training program kicks off with a dynamic 10-week Pre-Trade Training Programme. Where participants delve into essential skills, laying the groundwork for progression to Level 3 and beyond. This initiative is focused on stuents’ connection to their Whakapapa Awa, Maunga and Whenua to Ngāti Manawa and are currently MSD registered.

Toi Ohomai/Te Pukenga, the educational institution, has given a resounding thumbs-up to the adjacent workshop where construction activities unfold. The state-of-the-art classroom and workshop space provide an ideal environment for hands-on learning.

Wednesday marked an auspicious beginning for the participants. A traditional Whakatau ceremony welcomed them to the course, setting the tone for their journey. Additionally, Te Manawa o te Wai delivered an enlightening presentation on the care of tuna (eels) and water monitoring, within our rohe (territory). The program’s holistic approach garnered praise from attendees.

A trip to Rotorua ensured that students received their personal protective equipment (PPE) gear. Armed with safety essentials, they are ready for the immersive on-site tours scheduled throughout the 10-week program.

The inaugural course boasts a diverse mix of ages, ranging from 18 to 60+. Ripeka reports that students have already formed strong connections, emphasising the importance of the tuakana/teina (mentorship) dynamic within the cohort.

As the Trade Training Course gains momentum, it promises not only skill development but also a pathway to success for Murupara and its neighbouring communities. The future looks brighter than ever for those embarking on this transformative journey.

The trade training and the potential housing project will contribute to the overall growth of the community by empowering individuals and providing employment opportunities.
